GENERAL SUMMARY:


Velvet Taco has 30+ restaurants across multiple states, with plans to open additional restaurants over the next 5 years. We're looking for a talented and experienced Controller to join our Tribe! The Controller plays a critical role in achieving Velvet Taco’s annual and long-term growth plans. Reporting to the CFO, the position will be primarily responsible for supporting Velvet Taco’s accounting operations including budgeting, planning, and other financial matters.


This position has supervisory responsibilities which include overseeing the Team Members responsible for financial reporting, accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, billing, collections, payroll, and budget preparation, implementing internal control policies and procedures for all financial activities, and overseeing training programs/identifying training needs. This role will be included in leadership opportunities beyond traditional accounting duties as the company begins an aggressive growth and expansion plan. 


Position responsibilities include the following:

  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions in the restaurants and restaurant support office to minimize risk.
  • Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Recommends Financial Metrics that will be used to measure Velvet Taco’s performance and provides management with short and long-term financial objectives.
  • Produces the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to leadership.
  • Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Reviews financial details from past, present, and forecasted operations; identifies development opportunities and improvements that can be made.
  • Acts as the primary liaison between the external auditors and provides requested information for the annual audit.
  • Ensures accuracy and is capable of filing quarterly and annual reports with governmental agencies, including federal, state and local income, property, payroll, franchise, sales & use taxes.
  • Maintains knowledge of organizational procedures, federal and state regulations, and accounting standards ensuring compliance.
  • Acts as liaison between company’s insurance broker for all lines of insurance coverages.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required (Accounting or Business Administration), Master’s degree preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation required.
  • 10+ years of related experience in multi-unit retail, restaurant or hospitality required.
  • 5+ years with a public accounting firm or a public company in a management position required.
  • Restaurant experience (preferably at the Corporate or similar level) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated command of:
  • Excellent management and supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, attention to detail and time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in accounting and tax preparation software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software, and specialized accounting software used by the organization.
  • Excellent skills in PowerPoint creation and presentation.
  • Excellent and highly accurate math and accounting skills.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to multi-task and work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to partner and manage cross functionally with other departments.
  • Self-starter and must be able to work both autonomously and in a group setting.


  • Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer, must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Location: Position located in Velvet Taco Restaurant Support Office in Dallas, Texas
  • Travel Requirements: Travel as necessary to existing and future Velvet Taco markets
