Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in bioinformatics, computational biology or related field
Passion for craft beer and fermentation, with brewing experience (professional or hobby)
Fluency in relevant programming languages, such as Python, Perl, R, Java, and/or C++
Prior experience with molecular phylogenetics, genome assembly and annotation, variant analysis, and/or GWAS/QTL mapping
Understanding and ability to perform the bench science required to complement bioinformatics projects
Strong critical thinking, experimental design, data mining, interpreting biological significance, troubleshooting skills
Ability to work independently and be self-driven
Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment
Our R&D team is well-versed in yeast genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and brewing science. The Bioinformatics Scientist will play a central role in the development of new brewing strains, methods and products for the craft beverage industry. Initially, we will look to expand our NGS and genomic approaches to take advantage of the growing publicly available datasets, eventually building this into an in house sequencing program. This role will also involve processing and analysis of GC-MS datasets. We are looking for someone to be resourceful and curious with the knowledge base to propose new project ideas. A well-rounded training in molecular biology and bench science is ideal. The Bioinformatics Scientist reports to the Director of R&D.
Write and implement efficient and effective bioinformatics analysis tools, pipelines and software
Develop new methods and algorithms to identify and characterize brewing yeast genomes
Create and maintain databases for high-throughput sequence analysis
Design and implement an approach for a comparative analysis of GC-MS datasets
Collaborate effectively with colleagues to provide support and mentoring for bioinformatics projects
Communicate findings to coworkers, customers and beer enthusiasts, including presenting at conferences and/or meetings
Other duties as assigned
Pay is commensurate with experience.
