Job Description: Small Engine Mechanic
Reports to: Shop Manager

Position Summary: The Small Engine Repair Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing,
repairing, and maintaining a wide range of small engine equipment sold through the hardware
store-including gas-powered and battery-operated tools. This role is customer-facing at times
and requires excellent communication, professionalism, and the ability to handle occasional
cashiering tasks. The mechanic works closely with the Shop Manager, Parts Department, and
customers to ensure high-quality repairs and a positive service experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Customer Service & Communication
Assist in creating and maintaining a positive, professional, and safe work environment.
Communicate clearly and professionally with the Shop Manager, staff, and customers
regarding repair needs, timelines, and equipment status.
Utilize Repair Storm and telephone communication for repair processes, customer
updates, and service documentation.
Maintain a professional appearance, attitude, and work style at all times.
Remain calm, patient and professional with customers.
Perform cashiering duties as needed, including processing card transactions and
customer payments.
Provide customer-facing assistance at the service counter when customers drop off or
pick up equipment.
Assist with parts counter coverage when staffing is limited to ensure customers continue
to receive exceptional service.
Technical Repair Responsibilities
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair all lawn and garden power equipment-both gas and
battery-powered-sold through the hardware store.
Remove and install common service parts related to small engines (filters, spark plugs,
carburetors, blades, belts, batteries, cables, etc.).
Diagnose and repair battery powered lawn and garden equipment.
Perform routine maintenance, tune-ups, adjustments, and performance checks.
Ensure all repairs meet shop quality standards and safety requirements.
Continually build product and technical knowledge to improve repair efficiency and
accuracу.
Shop Maintenance & Operations
Assist with daily maintenance, orderliness, and cleanliness of the shop, parts area, stock
room, and outdoor merchandise service area.
Maintain a safe workspace by following all safety policies, equipment handling
procedures, and chemical/tool guidelines.
Support proper organization of equipment awaiting service, repair parts, and completed
jobs.
Administrative & Workflow Responsibilities
Multitask effectively between repairs, customer communication, parts needs, and
documentation.
Accurately record diagnostics, repair steps, parts used, and labor in Repair Storm or
related service software.
Follow established processes for repair intake, service ticket updates, and customer
pick-up notifications.
Assist with front-counter workflow during busy periods, including handling customer
questions or directing customers to the appropriate hardware store department.
Qualifications & Requirements
Skills & Abilities
Strong mechanical aptitude and small engine repair knowledge (training available).
Ability to accurately diagnose mechanical issues and perform repairs independently.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to multitask and stay organized in a high-volume environment.
Commitment to ongoing learning and product training.
Comfortable interacting with customers and performing occasional cashiering tasks.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift and move 40-60 lbs. regularly.
Ability to stand, bend, and work with hands for extended periods.
Preferred Experience
Prior experience in small engine repair, outdoor power equipment service, or related
mechanical fields preferred but not required.
Customer service or cashiering experience is a plus.
