Director of Fleet Operations

Summary:

The Director of Fleet Operations oversees the full lifecycle management of a 1,600+ unit fleet of vehicles, trailers, and heavy equipment across 30+ locations. Serving as the enterprise’s fleet authority, this role ensures cost-efficient utilization, compliance with DOT/FMCSA regulations, and operational continuity. The position partners with Operations, Finance, Safety, HR, and Legal to drive cost savings, mitigate risk, and maintain a safe, reliable, and professional fleet.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Fleet Strategy & Procurement

• Develop and execute fleet strategy, including capital forecasting, replacement modeling, and right-sizing.

• Lead procurement and upfitting of vehicles, trailers, and heavy equipment; coordinate branding, telematics, and field deployment.

• Manage vendor relationships, leasing agreements, warranty claims, and recall programs.

Operations & Maintenance

• Oversee internal repair facilities and external vendor programs to optimize uptime and cost efficiency.

• Ensure timely preventive maintenance, repairs, and replacement decisions based on lifecycle ROI analysis.

• Manage rental fleet usage, cost controls, and emergency asset deployment.

• Fuel management: Developing and managing fuel programs, including fleet cards and efficient routing, to significantly reduce one of the highest operational costs.

Compliance & Risk Management

• Maintain compliance with DOT, FMCSA, CDL, and state registration/title requirements across all jurisdictions.

• Conduct ongoing MVR checks, driver risk assessments, and fleet policy enforcement.

• Support insurance and legal claims through accurate driver logs, telematics, and inspection records.

• Develop and enforce company-wide fleet policies and risk prevention training for field

leaders. Creating and implementing specific fleet policies regarding vehicle use, driver behavior, and asset management to maximize efficiency and safety.

Technology & Data Management

• Administer fleet telematics and driver behavior systems, including safety analytics, DVIRs, and dash cameras.

• Maintain centralized fleet census and asset visibility, including VIN-level inventory, utilization, and location data.

• Integrate fleet data into operational platforms (CRM, dispatch) to support routing and technician deployment.

• Track fleet KPIs including cost-per-mile, downtime, safe driving scores, and compliance metrics.

Stakeholder Partnerships

• Collaborate with Finance on lifecycle modeling, cost analysis, and budgeting.

• Partner with Safety on incident investigations, coaching, and root cause mitigation.

• Align with Marketing on vehicle branding and public image.

• Support HR with driver qualification, tool accountability, and policy enforcement.

• Provide strong leadership and foster collaboration by partnering with branch-level teams to align resources, drive performance, and ensure consistent execution of organizational goals.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Logistics, or related field (preferred).

• 10+ years of progressive fleet management experience, ideally within service or construction industries.

• Demonstrated expertise in DOT/FMCSA compliance, procurement, and vendor management.

• Proficiency in fleet technologies (e.g., Geotab, dash cams, fuel card systems).

• Previous experience with managing fleet personnel, including staffing requirements, scheduling, performance management, and compliance with company and regulatory standards.

• Strong financial acumen with experience in capital planning and cost control.
