Bookkeeper / Accounting Manager

The Bookkeeper / Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting for a growing portfolio of restaurant brands, including Nuri Steakhouse, JOA Korean BBQ, and Flock & Fresh.


This is a hands-on role responsible for maintaining accurate books and financial records across multiple restaurant concepts and entities. The Accounting Manager will own core accounting processes including month-end close, general ledger, account reconciliations, accounts payable, cash and credit card reconciliations, inventory accounting, sales and tax-related reporting, and financial statement preparation. The role will partner closely with restaurant and family office leadership to provide timely, accurate financial information and help leaders understand the performance of each business. As the portfolio grows, this individual will also play an important role in establishing scalable accounting processes, systems, and controls.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This role may assume leadership responsibility for additional accounting team members as the portfolio grows.

 

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities:

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process across multiple restaurant concepts and legal entities, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Prepare journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, account analyses, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and other general ledger activity.
  • Prepare and maintain individual restaurant and consolidated financial statements, including P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow reporting.
  • Review monthly financial performance by restaurant and concept and identify significant trends, variances, or unusual activity for leadership.
  • Manage or oversee accounts payable, including invoice processing, coding, vendor reconciliation, payment preparation, and appropriate approval controls.
  • Reconcile daily and period sales, cash, credit card activity, gift cards, discounts, comps, refunds, tips, and other restaurant transactions to Toast and applicable bank accounts.
  • Maintain accurate accounting for restaurant inventory and cost of goods sold, including food, beverage, and other operating inventory.
  • Partner with restaurant operators to reconcile physical inventory counts to accounting records and investigate significant inventory or cost variances.
  • Maintain appropriate accounting and controls for high-value wine and beverage inventory, including purchases, inventory valuation, transfers, adjustments, depletion, and cost recognition.
  • Support accurate food and beverage cost reporting and provide visibility into variances that may indicate purchasing, pricing, waste, inventory, or operational issues.
  • Manage accounting for fixed assets, capital expenditures, leases, pre-opening expenses, and restaurant development or improvement projects.
  • Maintain appropriate accounting records across multiple legal entities and ensure transactions are recorded to the correct restaurant, concept, entity, and account.
  • Record and reconcile intercompany transactions and balances, as applicable.
  • Support sales tax, alcohol-related tax/reporting, property tax, 1099 reporting, and other applicable federal, state, and local reporting requirements in coordination with outside advisors as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with payroll providers and restaurant leadership to ensure payroll-related accounting entries, liabilities, and reconciliations are complete and accurate.
  • Maintain vendor records and support appropriate controls around vendor setup, payment changes, and disbursements.
  • Coordinate with external CPAs, tax advisors, auditors, banks, insurance providers, and other financial partners as needed.
  • Support annual tax preparation and provide schedules, reconciliations, and documentation requested by external advisors.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate internal controls over cash, purchasing, inventory, payments, and financial reporting.
  • Identify opportunities to improve and automate accounting processes, particularly integrations and workflows involving Toast, banking, payroll, inventory, and accounting systems.
  • Develop accounting processes and documentation that can scale as new restaurant locations, concepts, and entities are added.
  • Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Serve as the primary accounting resource for restaurant leadership, helping operators understand financial results and resolve accounting-related questions.
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis and reporting to family office and restaurant leadership as requested.
  • Utilize Restaurant365 (R365) as the primary accounting platform and help maintain accurate workflows, reporting, integrations, and accounting processes within the system.

 

Required Skills / Abilities / Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, general ledger accounting, financial statements, and month-end close.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and internal controls.
  • Hands-on mentality with the willingness and ability to personally execute the day-to-day accounting work.
  • Strong understanding of restaurant accounting, including sales reconciliation, cash management, credit card settlements, inventory, food and beverage cost, accounts payable, and restaurant-level P&Ls.
  • Ability to manage accounting across multiple concepts, locations, and legal entities while maintaining accurate separation of financial activity.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify discrepancies and investigate their root causes.
  • Ability to translate financial information into practical insights for restaurant operators and business leaders.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple deadlines and priorities independently.
  • Comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment where processes and infrastructure are still being built.
  • Ability to establish structure, processes, and controls without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Strong judgment, discretion, and ability to handle confidential financial information.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with Toast or similar restaurant POS systems strongly preferred.
  • Restaurant365 (R365) experience strongly preferred; experience with a comparable restaurant accounting platform may be considered.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • CPA designation preferred but not required.
  • Five or more years of progressive accounting experience preferred.
  • Restaurant, hospitality, or multi-unit food and beverage accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting multiple locations, concepts, or legal entities preferred.
  • Experience with fine dining and/or restaurants with significant wine and beverage programs is a plus.
  • Experience owning a complete month-end close process with limited administrative support strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a growing, entrepreneurial, family office, or privately held business environment is a plus.

 

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with regular interaction with restaurant leadership and operations.
  • Periodic visits to restaurant locations may be required to understand operations, inventory processes, controls, or financial procedures.
  • Occasional work outside normal business hours may be necessary during month-end/year-end close, restaurant openings, or other business-critical periods.


Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.


Travel Required:

  • Limited local travel between restaurant and office locations may be required.
