Position Summary
In alignment with the museum’s mission and values, Play Team members enhance the guest experience at Great River Children’s Museum. The ideal candidate will be a high-energy, well-organized, creative individual who enjoys working in a playful, team-oriented environment. Play Advocates engage with children and families visiting the museum, reset exhibits, and ensure that the entire museum environment is clean, safe and welcoming. Looking for weekday afternoon/evenings and weekends availability.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Going out of your way to create a meaningful experience for all guests
- Actively engaging guests by facilitating play in the exhibits and answering questions
- Monitoring exhibits for safety and cleanliness, including picking up loose parts
- Performing exhibit opening/closing procedures
- Helping maintain a clean, organized, safe, and welcoming museum environment by performing regular cleaning duties within exhibit areas, non-exhibit program areas, and common areas throughout the museum
- Assisting at the admissions desk as needed
- Assisting with museum events and outreach activities as needed
- Supporting educational programming activities and museum marketing efforts as needed
- Positively and accurately representing the mission and values of GRCM both inside and outside the museum
Required Skills and Abilities
- Commitment to excellent customer service and teamwork
- High comfort level interacting with children and adults in a fast-paced, high traffic, public environment
- Ability to recognize that children naturally learn through play and view children as capable and competent
- Respond to guests needs/emergency situations in a calm and comforting manner
- Communicate effectively and interact genuinely with families of all backgrounds and abilities
- Fluency in Spanish and/or Somali in addition to English is advantageous for this position, but not required
- Must be reliable and flexible
- Punctuality and attendance required
- Strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of GRCM
Physical Demands and Working Environment
- Ability to to stand, bend, climb, and/or walk for prolonged periods of time and interact with children and adults in our exhibits, including a three-story climber
- Occasional work outdoors
- Ability to work effectively in a highly sensory, stimulating work environment due to constant interaction with other staff and visitors, which includes children.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds
Must be age 16 or older to work in this position.
