The Back of House (BOH) Shift Manager is responsible for overseeing all kitchen and back-of-house operations during their shift. This role ensures food quality, operational efficiency, and safety standards while leading, coaching, and supporting the BOH team. The BOH Shift Manager works closely with Front of House leadership to provide seamless service and deliver a high-quality guest experience.


Job Duties & Responsibilities


Food Preparation & Quality Control:

  • Supervise food preparation, cooking, and plating to ensure consistency, quality, and presentation standards are met.
  • Monitor adherence to recipes, portion control, and cooking procedures.
  • Conduct quality checks on food items before they leave the kitchen to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Oversee catering, delivery, and special orders to guarantee accuracy, timeliness, and proper presentation.

Team Leadership & Development:

  • Supervise and coordinate BOH team members, assigning tasks and responsibilities for each shift.
  • Coach, train, and mentor kitchen staff to ensure proper execution of procedures, food safety, and operational excellence.
  • Monitor performance during shifts, provide real-time feedback, and conduct follow-ups to drive continuous improvement.
  • Assist in onboarding new BOH employees and support ongoing skill development.

Operational Management:

  • Open and close the kitchen according to company procedures, ensuring readiness for service.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy, monitor stock levels, and communicate supply needs.
  • Manage prep schedules, production planning, and workflow to ensure timely completion of all orders.
  • Minimize food waste and optimize resource utilization while maintaining quality standards.

Health, Safety & Sanitation:

  • Enforce strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and health regulations at all times.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and preparation of food to prevent contamination or spoilage.
  • Monitor cleaning schedules, kitchen organization, and maintenance of equipment.
  • Conduct regular inspections to maintain a safe and compliant kitchen environment.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Work closely with FOH leadership to ensure timely service and effective communication between kitchen and dining room.
  • Communicate operational priorities, special requests, and menu changes to the team.
  • Participate in management meetings, providing feedback on kitchen performance, staffing, and operational improvements.

Problem Solving & Decision Making:

  • Quickly address operational challenges, including staffing shortages, equipment malfunctions, or food quality issues.
  • Implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence of issues and improve overall efficiency.
  • Support crisis management and ensure minimal disruption to kitchen operations.

End-of-Shift Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all closing procedures are completed, including cleaning, restocking, and securing food storage areas.
  • Complete shift reports and communicate operational notes to the next shift or management team.
  • Verify that all BOH team members complete their assigned duties and maintain accountability.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of leadership experience with demonstrated success leading leaders and developing high-performing teams.
  • Proven ability to build, coach, and hold accountable Team Members, Leads, and Trainers to achieve operational excellence.
  • Demonstrates strategic thinking with the ability to align shift responsibilities with long-term vision and growth goals.
  • Experience owning and driving the restaurant’s mission including financial stewardship, labor management, food cost, and guest satisfaction.
  • Demonstrates full ownership mentality—treats the business as their own and leads with stewardship.
  • Ability to lead through change while maintaining morale, clarity, and high standards.
  • Skilled at conflict resolution, performance management, and courageous conversations.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Previous Chick-fil-A, food service, or restaurant experience.
  • Additional education, certifications, or formal training in business, leadership, hospitality, or restaurant management.
