Mammogram Technologist

Job Summary:


The Mammography Technologist is responsible for detecting breast tissue abnormalities by completing mammographic imaging studies and presenting them for diagnosis.  Additionally, the Tech will also be responsible for ensuring compliance with established protocols and standards for the American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation and Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) certification by the FDA. 


This role involves both hands-on clinical imaging as well as establishing the development, implementation, and monitoring of quality control measures to maintain ACR and MQSA program standards in the facility.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:


Monitoring & Evaluation:

  • Designs and implements a mammogram screening program tailored to CHN needs
  • Establishes workflows, protocols, and best practices for patient referrals, screenings, and follow-ups
  • Develop and integrate technology solutions to streamline scheduling, data tracking, and patient communication
  • Acts as a technical writer to develop policies, procedures, protocols, workflows, and reporting standards Protocol

Development:

  • Develop, implement, and update protocols to ensure compliance with ACR accreditation requirements and MQSA FDA certification standards
  • Create and review protocols for mammography procedures, ensuring the latest guidelines and best practices are followed
  • Work with management to ensure protocols aligned with organizational goals for imaging quality and patient safety

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

  • Ensure the facility remains in compliance with ACR and MQSA standards by conducting regular audits and inspections
  • Develop and implement procedures for quality assurance, including equipment calibration and routine checks
  • Maintain documentation of quality control results, inspections, and corrective actions taken to meet accreditation and certification requirements

FDA and ACR Accreditation Maintenance:

  • Coordinate with regulatory bodies and internal teams to maintain MQSA FDA certification and ACR accreditation
  • Assist in preparing for and supporting external audits and inspections related to accreditation and certification
  • Review and ensure compliance with all documentation, continuing education, and other requirements for accreditation and certification renewals

Education and Training:

  • Train and mentor new mammography technologists on protocols, safety procedures, and quality assurance practices
  • Provide education to staff on ACR and MQSA standards to ensure compliance and enhance overall performance

Collaboration and Reporting:

  • Work closely with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes
  • Communicate effectively with management and other team members regarding any issues related to mammography services, compliance, or quality control

Patient Interaction:

  • Provide exceptional patient care by maintaining a compassionate and professional demeanor
  • Assist with scheduling, preparing patients, and addressing patient concerns throughout the mammography process
  • Greet patients by confirming patient identification; reviewing imaging requests; checking for special instructions; confirming anticipated service with patients.
  • Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of imaging procedures; explaining equipment; answering questions.

Technical Acumen:

  • Performs radiologic mammography exams per department protocol
  • Perform high quality radiologic and mammography exams on incoming patients
  • Assess patient’s medical condition, age, size and other related medical conditions to determine if patient can undergo mammography examination and to how best to obtain optimal results/images
  • Immobilize patient as required for appropriate examination, explaining the need for breast compression during mammography
  • Minimizes radiation to patients and staff by practicing radiation protection techniques.
  • Maintains production and quality of mammograms by following established standards and procedures; developing mammograms; observing mammogram results; determining necessary adjustments for optimum results; retaking mammograms as required; forwarding completed studies to radiologist for interpretation
  • Documents patient mammogram services by completing patient record charting
  • Responsible for accurately entering data into the modality imaging systems (Exam Charges, Billable Medical Supplies, CPT/Procedure Codes, Patient Demographics, etc.)
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of billing, coding, national coverage decisions, ICD9/10 etc.
  • Maintenance of Equipment:
  • Ensures operation of mammography equipment by completing preventive maintenance; instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; and maintaining equipment inventories
  • Keeps mammography supplies and patient drapes ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; collecting and processing laundry.
  • Assists with equipment maintenance logs (e.g., Zip Rounds, crash cart, refrigerator, temperature logs etc.).
  • Conducts daily, weekly and monthly QC testing to ensure the quality control functions related to mammography
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following, and enforcing standards and procedures.

  • Experience working with community-based health programs
  • Knowledge of electronic health records (EHR) and healthcare data management systems
  • Bilingual proficiency, a plus

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Associate’s degree in radiologic technology or a related field
  • Mammography Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) required
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in mammography or diagnostic radiology, with a focus on mammographic imaging
  • Experience in developing protocols and working with ACR accreditation and MQSA standards is highly preferred
  • Familiarity with FDA regulations and quality assurance procedures in mammography
  • Registered Radiologic Technologist (RT) through the American Registry of Technologists (ARRT) and/or Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT)
  • Active ARRT (R) (M) or ARDMS (BR) certifications
  • Current non-restricted license or temporary license by the Texas Medical Board
  • MQSA accreditation required
  • Certified in Basic or Advanced Life Support (BLS/ALS)
  • Current on all required continuing education and continuing experience as required by MQSA and ARRT

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience with diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound and stereotactic biopsies is preferred
  • Additional certifications in breast imaging (e.g., advanced mammography, MRI, or ultrasound) preferred
