Commercial Construction Journeyman - HVAC/R

 

Job Summary  

RSC Mechanical is seeking an experienced Construction Journeyman to join its team in Atlanta, GA. This skilled, hands-on technician will be responsible for installing, repairing, and troubleshooting commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems for new construction and renovation projects. The role requires strong HVAC construction experience, the ability to read blueprints and plans, work independently, and complete high-quality installations with minimal supervision.

This is a field-focused position ideal for someone who takes ownership of their work, adapts quickly to challenges, and keeps projects moving safely and efficiently.

  

Key Responsibilities  

Installation & Construction 

  • Install commercial refrigeration and HVAC systems, including piping, walk-ins, evaporators, and rack systems  
  • Set and assemble walk-in boxes and refrigeration fixtures  
  • Install and verify operation of glycol and refrigeration systems  
  • Read and follow blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings to ensure accurate installation  
  • Perform layout and installation work with minimal direction  

Troubleshooting & Repairs 

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and control system issues  
  • Perform system startups, pump-downs, and operational checks  
  • Identify leaks and complete repairs following proper procedures  
  • Work with controllers (E2/Danfoss) including defrost cycles and system adjustments  

Independent Work & Job Ownership 

  • Work independently on assigned scopes of work and job sites  
  • Manage time, materials, and tasks to stay on schedule  
  • Take responsibility for quality, accuracy, and completion of work  
  • Support overall job progress without needing constant supervision  

Technical & Safety 

  • Weld and braze using open-flame methods  
  • Safely handle refrigerants and hazardous materials in compliance with EPA standards  
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, lifts, and job site equipment safely  
  • Follow OSHA safety requirements and company safety policies at all times  

Coordination & Communication 

  • Communicate with supervisors, contractors, and team members on job progress and issues  
  • Coordinate with other trades to avoid delays and conflicts  
  • Complete work tickets, time sheets, and job documentation accurately  
  • Maintain a professional presence on customer job sites  

  

Qualifications  

  • High school diploma or equivalent  
  • Journeyman-level experience in HVAC construction required  
  • Proven experience installing, repairing, and troubleshooting HVAC/R systems  
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents  
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision  
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills  
  • Experience in supermarket refrigeration systems preferred  
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record  

 

Schedule & Travel Requirements  

  • Full-time, with flexibility to work nights, weekends, and travel as required.  
  • Must be available to respond to urgent equipment or job site issues as needed.  
  • Approximately 90% travel 
  • Overnight and multi-day travel may be required

Work Environment & Physical Requirements  

  • Work performed indoors and outdoors, with potential exposure to noise, dust, fumes, odors, gases, mechanical/electrical hazards, moving objects, sharp edges, and varying weather conditions.  
  • Manual dexterity required.  
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, crouch, and occasionally climb stairs or ladders.  
  • Visual acuity sufficient to read printed and electronic materials.  
  • Ability to lift and/or exert force up to 50 pounds.  
  • Frequent driving of motor vehicles.

  • EPA Universal Certification  
  • OSHA 10 Certification  
  • Forklift Certification  
  • Scissor Lift Certification 
  • Valid driver’s license
