Position Summary:
The Garden Center Lead supports daily operations of theseasonal garden center tent, with a primary focus on plant care, product flow, customer service, and execution of established processes. This role is hands-on and customer-facing, helping maintain plant health, train team members on basic plant knowledge, and ensure the garden center is organized, well-watered, and visually appealing throughout the season. Seasonal position will run from March–October.
Key Responsibilities:
- The Assistant Live Nursery Lead focuses on execution, plant care, and customer experience
- Works closely with the Live Nursery Manager and serves as a key operational support
- Receive, unload, stage, and place live goods according to established layouts and priorities.
- Maintain consistent plant care standards, including watering, deadheading, rotating, and removing distressed product.
- Follow and execute the daily and weekly watering program to ensure plant health and minimize shrink.
- Keep the garden center clean, safe, and organized for customers and staff.
- Assist in training seasonal associates on basic plant care, handling, and customer-facing knowledge.
- Answer common customer questions regarding plant selection, care, and seasonal use.
- Operate cash register.
- Serve as a go-to resource on the floor for plant-related questions and best practices.
- Model strong work habits, attention to detail, and customer-focused behavior.
- Provide friendly, knowledgeable assistance to customers shopping the garden center.
- Help customers select appropriate plants based on needs, season, and conditions.
- Support smooth customer flow during peak periods and assist with problem resolution when needed.
- Assist with basic merchandising and presentation of live goods, including spacing, signage placement, and seasonal transitions.
- Help refresh displays and maintain visual standards set by the Live Nursery Manager.
- Support seasonal resets and promotional changes within the tent.
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
- Prior experience working with plants, garden centers, nurseries, or outdoor retail preferred.
- Employee must regularly move and/or lift 50lbs
- At least 18 years of age
- Strong customer service skills and a helpful, approachable attitude.
- Basic plant knowledge or a willingness to learn quickly.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Comfortable training and guiding other seasonal associates without formal managerial authority.
- Ability to read, write, analyze, interpret and understand the English language with sufficient proficiency in order to read and understand
- While performing the duties, the employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, and color vision with the ability to adjust focus
