Structural Engineer: Hospitality and Housing

Sandman Structural Engineers (SSE) is searching for an experienced Structural Engineer to join our Hospitality and Housing Team. In this position you are responsible to guide and support the team and projects to enable the success of our clients and our people.

 

Core Responsibilities


1.Project Management – 25%

Create forecasts, budgets, and schedules to ensure optimal resource allocation and ensure adherence to project management template, key systems, and other relevant policies to achieve optimal utilization rates and billed vs. spent ratios.


Key Activities:

  • Develop and negotiate proposals and contracts
  • Develop project budgets and workload forecasts
  • Develop and coordinate project schedules
  • Prepare and conduct project kick-off meetings
  • Ensure project process compliance
  • Maintain project accounting records real-time

2.Coaching and Leadership – 10%

Provide proactive, meaningful, and real-time coaching and guidance opportunities to increase the confidence, competence, satisfaction, and performance of team members.


Key Activities:

  • Foster and utilize rubrics system to promote positive change
  • Provide real-time feedback
  • Coach and mentor team members
  • Teach technical, managerial, and leadership skills
  • Recognize and appreciate team members for contributions and accomplishments
  • Delegate duties such that all team members are doing their highest and best use

3.Client Relationships – 20%

Create an optimal rhythm of client communication to create and sustain trusting relationships and maintain/increase client satisfaction and retention.


Key Activities:

  • Develop personal relationships with clients that go beyond the work
  • Understand client work pipeline
  • Conduct project meetings in a professional manner
  • Understand the clients requirements and expectations
  • Stay current with clients via check-ins
  • Review and recap project success with clients

4.Technical Expertise and Quality Control – 40%

Oversee the execution of key systems, processes, trainings, and continuous improvement efforts to ensure projects are delivered with adherence to all internal and external standards.


Key Activities:

  • Mastery of engineering skills and knowledge necessary to produce projects that meet firm expectations
  • Consistently exhibit sound engineering judgement
  • Recognize high risk projects and take corrective actions
  • Oversee drafting and design standard practices
  • Ensure project progression is on track and within scope
  • Perform technical design work on projects
  • Ensure adequate review and coordination of other trades
  • Ensure constructability of design and detailing
  • Conduct final drawing reviews

5.Administration – 5%

Keep projects up to date in Ajera to ensure clients are invoiced accurately and SSE is paid in a timely manner.


Key Activities:

  • Ensure documents and emails are filed appropriately
  • Approve timecards, expenses, and PTO
  • Ensure timely invoice processing
  • Follow-up with clients concerning outstanding invoices

Qualifications


Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET/EAC accredited program
  • 6+ years of engineering experience with clear progression in responsibility and leadership
  • Proficient use of the English language, both verbal and written
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • Physically able to conduct field inspections and testing as assigned
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record

Preferred:

  • 4+ years focus in structural engineering
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills, adaptable to all audiences
  • Member of professional organization, member and/or officer of local related organization
  • Involved in community service programs

Environmental Conditions:

Office environment; field environment; construction site environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, heat, cold, and inclement weather conditions when conducting field inspections and investigations.
