Horticulture Technician

Carmel Landscapes | Middlefield Ohio

Carmel Landscapes is a landscape design and construction company serving Middlefield, the Chagrin Valley and Northeast Ohio. We create beautiful, sustainable landscapes you can grow with, through quality workmanship, responsible care for the site and continued professional development.

We are seeking an experienced landscape gardener for planting, pruning, ornamental bed maintenance and plant health care. You will install and maintain native plants, trees, shrubs and perennial gardens, working independently on suitable assignments or alongside a crew. This role focuses on the living landscape and the quality of its long-term care; a foreman will not always be on site.

Responsibilities

• Plan and complete assigned work independently when it is within your demonstrated skills and authorized scope; work with a crew when the task requires it. Clarify unfamiliar work, request help for tasks that need additional people or equipment, and contact management about unexpected conditions or changes before proceeding.

• Install trees, shrubs, perennials, mulch and ornamental beds according to workorders and paper landscape drawings.

• Prepare soil and planting areas, handle plants carefully, and apply appropriate planting depth, spacing, watering and mulching practices.

• Prune trees and shrubs using appropriate methods and applicable ANSI A300 tree care standards; maintain garden beds and seasonal plantings.

• Identify common Ohio native plants and weeds, scout for pests and disease symptoms, and report plant health concerns using integrated pest management principles.

• Assess soil conditions, drainage and moisture; collect soil samples and interpret test results to support appropriate care and amendments.

• Organize plant and material deliveries, operate landscape tools safely, protect surrounding plants and communicate professionally with clients.

• Support snow removal and plowing duties for full-time, year-round employment, following training and assigned responsibilities.

Skills and experience

• 3+ years of hands-on landscape installation and plant-care experience, with demonstrated plant identification and pruning skills.

• Working knowledge of soil conditions, plant health and professional landscape equipment.

• Valid driver's license, clean driving record and reliable transportation; truck-and-trailer experience is valuable.

• Ability to perform physical outdoor work and lift or move 50+ pounds safely, using assistance or equipment as needed.

• Ability to organize and complete familiar plant-care work without continuous on-site supervision, recognize the limits of your skills, and communicate progress and concerns clearly.

Company apps and job documentation

• Record job time, plants and materials used, and work completed in company apps.

• Photograph plant conditions and completed work; write clear notes about pests, disease symptoms, watering needs and follow-up tasks.

• Keep records current and report concerns to the designated supervisor or management contact, including when working alone. Complete chemical-application records when assigned and authorized.

Schedule

Full-time, year-round employment includes winter snow removal. Plant-care work follows seasonal needs and weather.

Pay and benefits

$23-27/hour for the advertised experienced role, based on demonstrated skills and ability to perform its responsibilities. This range applies to this position; another available role may have a different pay rate.

• Medical, dental and vision benefits available for eligible full-time employees.

• Paid time off under the company PTO policy.

• Paid holidays off in addition to PTO.

• Paid training and professional development opportunities.

To apply

A resume is optional. Please provide professional references. Be ready to identify plants, explain planting and pruning decisions, discuss a soil or plant-health problem and complete a sample company-app record. Industry certifications and pesticide-applicator credentials are welcome. Apply treatments only when trained and authorized for the assignment.

We hire around demonstrated skills and individual strengths. If you do not meet every requirement, we still encourage you to apply. Based on your practical abilities, interests and readiness for responsibility, we may consider you for another available role, including a supervised trainee position or a role with more or less management responsibility. Any alternative role, its duties, training expectations and pay will be discussed clearly with you before you accept an offer.
