The Y is the nation’s largest provider of swim lessons to increase skill and safety in and around water. The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. While in a safe and fun learning environment, our Swim Instructor will help students learn lifesaving skills, build relationships, gain confidence around water, and a sense of achievement. The Swim Instructor will maintain a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim class.
We are currently in need on Swim Instructors who can work Mondays and Tuesday between 10am-12pm.
Day In The Life of a Swim Instructor:
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helping them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students and parents to other programs provided by the Y.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.
- Supervises class participants while in and out of the water, enforcing safety rules and regulations as set forth by the facility in a preventive manner.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Evaluates potentially dangerous situations and perform the appropriate required rescue techniques to the situation and proper first aid as needed.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.
- Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire date.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness and heat.
- Must have a high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform job responsibilities.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; occasionally stoop/bend.
