The Y is the nation’s largest provider of swim lessons to increase skill and safety in and around water. The Swim Instructor is a vital part of that and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swimming classes. While in a safe and fun learning environment, our Swim Instructor will help students learn lifesaving skills, build relationships, gain confidence around water, and a sense of achievement. The Swim Instructor will maintain a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for students in swim class.
We are in need of Swim Instructors who can work:
Mondays 4pm-7:20pm, Tuesdays 5:30-7:20pm, Wednesdays 12:30-2:20pm and Saturdays 10:30am-1pm.
Day In The Life of a Swim Instructor:
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
- Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helping them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and refers students and parents to other programs provided by the Y.
- Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
- Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.
- Supervises class participants while in and out of the water, enforcing safety rules and regulations as set forth by the facility in a preventive manner.
- Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
- Evaluates potentially dangerous situations and perform the appropriate required rescue techniques to the situation and proper first aid as needed.
- Organizes and puts away needed class equipment.
- Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
- Previous experience in formal swimming (i.e. swim team) and/or teaching (swimming or elsewhere) preferred.
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques.
- YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Visual, auditory, and verbal ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme humidity/dampness and heat.
- Must have a high level of alertness, concentration, and initiative.
- Sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform job requirements.
- Lifting, walking, sitting and standing for extended periods of time; occasional stooping and bending
CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required within 30 days of hire date.
