If you are starting your own business, obtaining an Employer Identification Number (EIN) should be on top of your list. Once you have applied for the EIN, one sure way for you to confirm this is through a CP 575 Letter.

What is a CP 575 Letter?

A CP 575 Letter is a generated letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) which serves as a confirmation letter indicating the Employer Identification Number (EIN) that is given to your business. Aside from the EIN, the CP 575 Letter also contains information regarding tax forms that are required for your business to file.

How can I get a CP 575 Letter?

You do not just get a CP 575 simply by requesting it. Before the IRS issues a CP 575 Letter, you must have duly applied for an EIN for your business by accomplishing and submitting the IRS Form SS-4. Only once your application has been approved will the IRS send a CP 575 Letter to the address you listed on Form SS-4. The CP 575 Letter is typically sent within four to six weeks upon application.

I already know what my EIN is. What is the purpose of having a CP 575 Letter on hand?

Your EIN is essential for your business. It is required for multiple things such as filing your company’s taxes, applying for business loans, credit card loans, payroll, opening new bank accounts, and many more. While providing your EIN may be enough in some cases, some organizations may require that you present the CP 575 Letter as proof that the EIN you provided is indeed yours.

I lost my CP 575 Letter. Can I request a new one?

Unfortunately, the IRS will not replace a CP 575 Letter. Even so, there is no need to panic. If you have lost your CP 575 Letter and require an original paper document to prove your EIN, you can request for the IRS to verify your EIN via Letter 147c. This is an official letter from the IRS that verifies your EIN.

The best way to request this is by calling the Business & Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933. Their operating hours are 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM local time, Mondays through Fridays. You must be ready to answer some identifying information for security purposes.
