The work schedule of pickers is generally in the daytime. However, depending on the warehouse facility’s schedule, work may also fall during evening hours, weekends, and holidays if required.

Responsibilities of a Picker
Generally, pickers are responsible for the accurate retrieval of products to fulfil specific orders. They ensure that they get the accurate size and quantity of products of all picking tickets. Pickers study and understand the warehouse areas by heart to locate products easily. Depending on the company, pickers can use technology or machines as required.
Pickers receive picking orders and pack items, build pallets with necessary items and prepare them for loading. They also wrap, tag, and seal orders. Another responsibility of pickers is confirming shipping information and accuracy of orders. Additionally, pickers maintain an organized and clean work environment. They maintain a record of completed orders and monitor inventory as well. Also, they report any malfunction of any equipment and materials. Lastly, pickers adhere to all safety and quality policies and standards.
Skills and Qualifications of a Picker
To apply as a picker, a candidate needs to have a high school diploma or GED. Previous work background in a warehouse in a similar role is generally preferred. However, most employers will provide on-the-job training. Familiarity or experience in handling pallets and other warehouse tools and equipment is a plus.
Pickers receive numerous instructions and orders every day. As such, candidates need to listen well and be able to follow written and verbal instructions. To be successful in this position, candidates need to have strong communication and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate is somebody who thrives in working with a team and loves to achieve common goals and targets. Punctuality, attention to detail, and time management skills are also beneficial. Lastly, candidates must have the physical strength to lift or carry heavy objects as necessary, move around, and be on their feet for long periods.
